Gel Nail Polish, Why Is It Hard To Remove It?

Gel nail polish is a unique formula of nail lacquer that is cured under LED or ultraviolet lamp to harden it. It takes 2-3 weeks without chipping making it more practical and better than other manicures.

When applying gel nail polish, there are several steps taken; there is the application of power bond, gel polish base coat, color application and gel polish top coat, not forgetting the use of LED lamp or UV lamp in between application of the products. This is just a brief summary, but the actual process is long and takes a lot of skill; hence, the reason is why its removal is hard and may cause damage if a proper method is not taken.

Remove Gel Nail Polish with Acetone and Aluminum Foil

This is an easy way to take off gel nails. It is effective and requires very time to get back your fresh natural nails.

Items needed:

  • Cotton balls
  • Aluminum Foil
  • 100% pure acetone or nail posh remover
  • Paper towel or regular towel
  • Nail file with a fine-grit side and coarse-grit side
  • Nail buffer
  • Orange/small stick or metal cuticle pusher

Make sure the items are clean and well sanitized to avoid infection.

Procedure

  1. Begin by setting up a beauty station. This reduces the time used and prevents you from making a mess all over.
  • Use a towel or small towel to cover over the beauty station.
  • Cut the aluminum foil into small rectangular or square pieces that will fit around the nail and can seal the top the finger (around 3’ by 3’). Ten pieces. One for each finger.
  • Separate or cut the cotton ball into little pieces just enough size for each nail, also ten pieces are enough.

  1. Use the nail file’s coarse-grit side to get rid of the top coat of the gel nail polish; they will come off quickly. Do it gently you don’t want to go to dip to your natural nail. Just file enough to take off the shiny gel top coat so as to allow the acetone to penetrate the coat.

3. Saturate one piece of the cotton ball in acetone just enough for it to be wet. Cover the nail squarely with the cotton filled with acetone. Make sure to cover the tip of the nail and also the cuticles to ensure the cotton has contact with all area of the nail.

Wrap your finger tip with one piece of aluminum foil to secure the cotton ball on the nail in place. Repeat this on the other nails.

4. Keep fingers like this for about fifteen minutes.

5. Gently start removing the foils one by one; you can press on the foil with your fingers then pull. By doing this, some of the gel polish comes off. Use the orange or small stick or metal cuticle pusher to scrape the polish off the gel nail polish remainders.

6. Finally use the nail buffer to smoothen your nails and remove the residue polish left. Your fingers are going to become dry because of the acetone, so use cuticles oil or cream to re-hydrate and rejuvenate your nails and cuticles.

When Using Aluminum Foil and Acetone to Remove Gel Nail Polish

The process is effortless because the polish comes out gently when you lift them off. The gentle and careful procedure is practiced to avoid scratches and damage on the natural nail. When you are done, use the cotton ball to remove any left-over polish.

If you have white spots on your nails after the polish removal, it means that there was a lot of force use when removing and acetone was not given enough time to sink in or penetrate the polish. So give it time then remove the polish gently and slowly.

Gel nail polish and acetone weakens the nails. It is advisable to stay for a few days without reapplying gel nail polish, to let them rejuvenate and get a bit stronger.

NB. Remember that ordinary nail polish remover is not as effective, compared to 100% pure acetone. Acetone fills uncomfortable and is a little tingly, but this gets better with time.

Cutting up pieces of aluminum foil and tying them around your nails may be tedious and time wasting. Well, there’s a simple way to remove gel nail polish without the aluminum foil menace. Here’s how

Procedure

  1. Set up a small station
  2. You need two bowls, one bigger than the other
  3. In the small bowl, put acetone
  4. In the larger one, put in warm water
  5. Place the small bowl with acetone in the large one with warm water. This makes sure your acetone is warm throughout the removal process. Warm acetone soaks into the gel nail polish faster. Note that acetone is flammable and cannot be warmed in the microwave or stove.
  6. Dip all your fingers into the acetone and allow them to soak for at least 10 minutes without peeking
  7. Once the polish is soaked, used the end of an orange wood stick to scrap in off. Continue to do this for each finger until all the polish is removed.
  8. Once the gel polish is completely removed, trim your nails and give them a final smooth buffer
  9. Finally, moisturize your hands- acetone is very drying. Your hands will need lots of lotion after gel nail polish removal with acetone.

This procedure may actually take longer than when you use aluminum foil. To avoid this, allow your nails to soak in longer without taking a peek at them.

How to Remove Gel Nail Polish at Home Using Sugar

Sugar has been touted to be gel nail polish remover. I haven’t tried this personally but I read quite a lot on people who say this worked for them. Here is how to:

  1. In a small bowl, add a tablespoon of white sugar and isopropyl
  2. Mix them well
  3. Soak a cotton pad in this mixture and use it to remove gel nail polish as you normally do

I personally think that this remedy is a sham. This will probably work as a normal nail polish remover. All you’ll end up with is a sweet mess.

Nail soakers are perfect for removing gels nail polish and acrylics. They are faster and require only a small amount of acetone. They come in a pack of 10.  Nail soakers are long lasting and can be reused.

  • You can apply cuticle oil or Vaseline on your nails and cuticles, to counter the effects of acetone.
  • Start with the non-dominant hand. It results to easier and faster.
  • Use the Metal natural pusher to scrape the remaining polish off its better off than the orange stick, but be more careful it’s simpler to scratch your natural nail or course other damages.
  • Avoid peeling the gel nail polish off or using a file to remove all part of it; you might not like the results so just use this method, and all will be well.

Using eye makeup to remove false eyelashes is a common method. It can be easily done at home even by beginners. It is lash friendly and pain free.

Use a non- oil based eye makeup or eyelash remover that meets your skin requirements. Test for allergies to prevent future skin problems.  You can buy makeup removers or eyelash removers from Cosmetologist, online or beauty shops.

Items needed:

  • Makeup or eyelash remover.
  • Cotton bud.
  • Warm water
  • Towel or piece of cloth.
  • Mirror

Step 1

  1. Remove extra makeup from your face and near the eye using a towel or piece of cloth dipped in warm water. Put eyelash or makeup remover on the cotton bud till it’s completely soaked up.
  2. Standing in front of a mirror take the cotton bud moistened with Makeup or eyelash remover. Lightly massage the eyelashes- don’t rub to avoid wrinkled eyelashes just.
  3. Allow the remover to soak in and the false eyelash line to loosen up. This will take at least 20 – 30 minutes.
  4. Grab the fake eyelash from the outer side and lightly drag them of your eyelid slowly. If it’s a bit stiff, apply a little oil and wait a few seconds then try to remove again.
  5. After removing the false eyelashes remove the glue remaining on the eye leads with the soaked cotton and cleanse your face with the towel.

  2. Dip the cotton bud in oil as let it soak up.
  3. Take the oil soaked cotton bud and gently tap it on the glue part of the fake eyelashes. Simply massage the eyelashes to avoid wrinkled and saggy eyelashes.
  4. Wait for the oil to soak in the part of the glue area to loosen up. Do this for both lashes. It takes 20-40 minutes for the oil to set in but it can take longer depending how sticky the glue was.
  5. Use cotton swab or your fingers to pick out any glue stuck on the lashes
  6. Try not to use Tweezers, Eyelash curlers or your nails when removing false eyelashes to avoid poking your eyes and also not to damage of the lashes.

Clean thoroughly to remove all traces of makeup, dirt or glue. Here are two ways to clean the lashes correctly:

Most people prefer this method because the lashes are dipped in a bowl of alcohol or makeup -remover or hot soapy water to remove glue and mascara. Mascara may lead your lashes to become brittle and may break if not cleaned for long.

What you need:

  • Tweezers
  • fan brush
  • Tooth or Lash brush
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Small plastic container or bowl
  • Paper towel/tissue paper
  • Make-up remover

Procedure

  1. Pour small amounts of alcohol into your clean plastic container, and then place the dirty eyelashes into your bowl or container. NB Alcohol may be replaced with make-up remover or warm soapy water.
  2. Let the lashes soak in alcohol for a minute or two.
  3. Meanwhile, clean your hands with soap and water
  4. Using tweezers or your hands, pick one lash from the bowl. Pull the glue out using tweezers while holding the lashes near the base with your hand to avoid messing up the shape of the lash. Do this until all of the glue has been pulled out.
  5. Then place it on the paper towel, and use a clean fan brush to clean mascara from the lashes, dip the brush in the alcohol to help remove the mascara residue, place the lash back in alcohol and pick the other.
  6. Remember to turn the lashes on the other side, and clean the underside. Repeat the steps until no more mascara comes off and there is no left-over lash glue.
  7. Use the toothbrush to go in-between the lash to make the sure all the hairs are nice and separated. Then use eyebrow comb to make sure no mascara is left, check for glue and mascara residue one last time.
  8. I prefer the use of alcohol over make-up remover because make-up remover is oily and it leaves residue on the lashes. On the other hand, alcohol dries faster when applied. It also disinfects the lash strip line.

Use of Q-Tip or Cotton Swabs to Clean Your False Eyelashes

It’s quicker than the container with alcohol method and requires less amount of alcohol.

What you need:

  • Eye make-up remover Q-tip or cotton swap.
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Tweezers
  • Toothbrush
  • Paper towel or toilet paper
  • Makeup remover or eyelash remover

Procedure

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Place the lashes on a paper towel
  3. Take one false eyelash and grip it on its base by use of hand
  4. Use a pair of tweezers to pull out the glue, clumps of mascara and make-up residue
  5. Repeat this with for the other lash
  6. Using a Q-tip, apply rubbing alcohol and gently rub off mascara
  7. Remember to turn the lash and clean the underside
  8. Repeat the process till no mascara is coming off

Use the toothbrush to go in-between the lash to make the sure all the hairs are nicely separated. Then use eyebrow comb to make sure no mascara is left, check for glue and mascara residue one last time.

If you use soap wash or make –up remover, give it a little time for them to dry up. NB. Alcohol dries very fast, so drying isn’t necessary.

How to Store Fake Eyelashes for Reuse

After successfully cleaning the lashes, the next process is to store them safely is next process. Store fake eyelashes in airtight boxes or cases they came with, old jewelry boxes or a contact lens box. Then store in a dark place to avoid sunlight which may cause the lashes to fade in color.

NB: After cleaning, make sure everything (tweezers brushes and bowl) cleaned well. Always make sure your hands are clean when handling false eyelashes. Using the methods above to remove, store and clean eyelashes will make it possible for you to reuse false eyelashes 3-6 times.

The technology used is called MicroValve technology and is patterned.

Use of a nose strap is more common than Theravent; it’s applied on the nose surface over the Dorsum Nasi and nasofacial angle. However, Nose strap is not as effective as Theravent because if your snoring originates from the throat, it’s less efficient.

How Long Does Food Poisoning Last?

When to Consult a Doctor

Signs and symptoms of food poisoning may be severe or persistent if you are elderly or have an underlying medical condition. Tests will be carried out to determine the cause of your food poisoning. Further treatments like antibiotics for bacterial food poisoning may be prescribed.

Self-breast exam is a technique, a step by step approach for individual examination of the breast. It allows you to check for any physical and visual changes of the breast. It involves looking at and feeling your breasts for lumps and skin thickening. Often used as an early detection tool for breast cancer, breast self exam should be used by both men and women. It should however not be used as a sole screening method for breast cancer. Here are guidelines on how to do a self breast exam.

Self Breast Examination

Self breast exam seemed promising when it was first introduced. However, clinical trials have found no difference in women who did a routine self breast exam and those who did not. Experts do not recommend this as a screening tool for breast cancer. It may give more false results leading to early biopsies which turn benign.

Best Time to Do a Breast Self Exam

What is the best time to do a self breast exam? Breast exam should be performed by both men and women from the age of 18 at least once every month. Choose a specific day each month preferably at the end of your monthly period. If pregnant or not menstruating, do your breast exam same day every month. It is advisable to keep a journal of your BSE’s to track and keep record of any changes.

According to The Breast Cancer Charities of America, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with cancer. When detected early, breast cancer has a 98% survival rate. It is very important for you to know what is normal. Get to know what your breasts normally look and feel like. This will help you detect any changes. Any unusual changes should be reported to your doctor. Your doctor will discuss with you the benefits and limitations of a self breast exam.

Unusual symptoms to check for include:

  1. Change in size or shape of the breast. One breast may be normally larger. However, sudden changes should not occur.
  2. Dimpling or puckering of breast skin. The skin may have pitting marks that make it look like an orange
  3. A lump or thickening in, near the breast or in the underarm area.
  4. Nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing the nipple, only in one breast, if clear or bloody
  5. Nipple retraction
  6. Scaly, itchy, red, warm breast skin
  7. Unexplained swelling or shrinking of the skin
  8. Noticeable increase in size and number of veins compared to the other breast

Note that lumps are rarely a sign of breast cancer. If you find a lump or any changes, do not panic. Consult your doctor for an evaluation. If you’ve had a benign lump in the past, do not assume that a new lump will also be benign.

Other than breast cancer, breast lumps can be caused by:

  • Mammary fat necrosis- lumps formed by injured or dead fat tissue
  • Fibrocystic breast disease- painful, lumpy breasts caused by hormonal changes
  • Adenofibroma- benign tumor of the breast tissue
  • Intraductal papilloma- small, benign tumor of the milk ducts

How to Do a Self-Breast Exam

Even though considered a less effective screening tool, a BSE helps you to familiarize yourself with the size, shape and texture of your breasts. This will help you determine what is normal or abnormal. Here is how to a self-breast exam

While Lying Down

This is the best position to perform a BSE. The best tissue spreads out evenly on the chest wall.

  • Place a small pillow or folded cloth under your right shoulder
  • Place your right arm behind your head
  • Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers gently in circular motions. Keep your fingers flat and constant in a clockwise directions. Once you complete a full circle, move in toward the nipple and complete another circle.
  • Do this until you cover the entire breast and the nipple. When gently pressed inwards, the nipple should move easily.
  • Squeeze the nipple to check for any discharge
  • Do not forget the upper outer areas of your breast towards the armpit
  • Repeat the steps above for your left breast

In Front of the Mirror

This will help you note any changes in shape, size and contour of the skin on either breasts.

  • Place arms at your sides
  • Raise both arms above your head, bending forward
  • Place hands firmly on your hips and hunch over to flex your chest muscles
  • Check for any nipple discharge; be it clear, milky, yellow or bloody

In the Shower

The fact that your hands are wet and slippery makes this procedure easy and fast.

  • Place your left hand on your hip
  • With your right hand, reach for your underarm area and feel for any lumps and thickening
  • Check for the same below and above the collarbone
  • Use the flat part of your index, middle and ring finger follow and up and down pattern from the bra line to the collarbone.
  • Continue until the entire breast is covered. Repeat the procedure for the other breast

Almost half of cancerous lumps are found in the upper outer quadrant. Also known as the tail of the breast, it is advisable to examine this area closely.

Incidence of cancerous lumps in each area of the breast are as follows:

  • 41% in the upper outer quadrant
  • 14% in the upper inner quadrant
  • 5% in the lower inner quadrant
  • 6% in the lower outer quadrant
  • 34% in the area behind the nipple

 Self Breast Exam Recommendations

Always remember that self breast examination should not be used as a sole screening tool for breast cancer. Mammography can detect lumps before they can be felt in a BSE. A combination of both mammography, BSE and regular medical care is recommended for early detection of any abnormalities. If you find a lump, DO NOT panic. 8 out 10 lumps are not cancerous.

  • Once every month, set aside 15 minutes to conduct a thorough breast examination
  • Do a mammography screening every other year if above 50 years. Consider a thermography screening on alternate years. If positive, schedule a mammogram.
  • When there’s need to perform a mammogram, schedule it within the first 14 days of your menstrual cycle.
  • If you have breast implants, have a doctor help you to identify the edges of your implants so that any changes in contour can be easily noted.
