In the recently ended Miss World 2015 beauty pageant, miss Jamaica made history as the first miss world contestant with dreadlocks.
The 2015 Miss World Jamaica title holder, Sanneta Myrie, was crowned in August 2015. Apart from being a beauty with brains who is in the medical field, she made history as being the first woman to ever be crowned Miss Jamaica World while donning locked hair.
After the crowning, the 24 year old went ahead to represent her country in the Miss World 2015 beauty pageant which she finished with a top five placing.
Dreadlocks are a rare sight in most beauty pageants and it was only in 2007 that Zahra Redwood from Jamaica became the first woman with dreadlocked hair to win the Miss Universe contest. She was also the first Rastafarian to be crowned winner. In the same way, this is the first time there has been a dreadlocked contestant in the Miss World Pageant.
Her glam hairstyle helps to break barriers and break conceptions on people donning dreadlocks. The significance of this is that it brings into the pageant some more diversity on the standards of beauty especially on matters related to hair. It also helps to break the tradition of manipulated hairstyles and voluminous additions that rock most beauty contests.
Other than Dr. Sanneta Myrie, Maria Borges also helped to break away from norm in the Victoria’s Secrets 2015 Fashion Show by walking the aisle in a teeny Winy afro. These are definitely great milestones in the history of natural hair for persons of Afrocentric origin.
Hopefully, these two events that happened this year will propel beauty contestants and fashion models to rock their hair it its natural form and with the least manipulation.
