Desmond Tutu’s Reverend Daughter Loses Church License after Marrying Female Partner

Desmond Tutu’s daughter, Mpho Tutu- Van Furth has had her religious duties stripped away after marrying her partner, Marceline Tutu-van Furth.

South Africa’s Anglican church did this amid public outrage following her marriage to her long time partner. Since the church does not recognize gay marriage, Mpho has handed back her license. While confirming this, senior local priest Bruce Jenneker said the Saldanha diocese had received Ms Tutu-van Furth’s licence with “sadness”.

As such, she is no longer allowed to preside over baptisms, weddings, funerals and the holy communion.

This did not come as a surprise to her since the canon law of the South African Church states that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

The revocation of her license comes after the couple held a wedding party outside Cape Town earlier this month. In attendance was her father, Desmond Tutu, and his wife.

The couple, who got married in December 2015, are both divorced and have children.
